As of Large outdoor events will also be impacted, with face coverings required at events holding more than 30, people, but not when attendees are seated outdoors. There was one young boy who was never able to make it through a whole session. He would inevitably end up sitting against the wall, appearing to zone out. He had outbursts and once choked another student during a session.
He also unraveled at the theatre when we came to see our Main Stage show. He never left the room when he would withdraw from participating, and my amazing classroom teacher was so patient with this young boy.
I walked away that year thinking that I had in some way failed to engage him. The Fall of the next school year my classroom teacher and I decided to start a mentoring program. We would ask our now fourth graders to come in and help in session with our new 3rd graders.
The very first student to step forward and volunteer was the young boy who had never finished a session. He came in and stood beside me and led with grace and confidence. He taught me at that moment to never assume what engagement looks like, we all connect differently.
These skills are not only useful in helping students comprehend their own agency now, but also into the future. They develop agency and kindness, and other critical skills necessary as the future generation of leaders. I hope that my students will build on these fundamental skills in their futures and become leaders and activists.
Julie Smith Healey also hopes students leave the program understanding empathy and appreciating the differences we all have. I hope they walk this world knowing we are stronger together than we are apart.
